PIR Board
PIR insulation (polyisocyanurate) is a rigid foam insulation board with a typical thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK, making it one of the best-performing insulation materials available for UK construction.
PIR insulation works across almost every insulated element in a building.
Key Features of PIR Board Insulation:
- Consists of a closed-cell foam core bonded between facings
- Provides structural rigidity
- Water and water vapour struggle to penetrate the material
- The thermal performance stays consistent over the building’s lifetime
- Suitable for a wide range of residential and commercial applications
- Air can’t circulate through the material
Perfect for Limited Space
Due to PIR's thermal conductivity being so low, it can achieve the same level of insulation as other materials with a thinner profile, making it ideal for areas where space is limited.
For example on using 100mm of PIR board can achieve the same level of insulation as 150mm of mineral wool, meaning that it can fit into smaller cavities while still providing excellent thermal performance.
How it Achieves Superior Thermal Performance
The foam consists of millions of tiny closed cells, each acting as a sealed bubble. This structure prevents air circulation through the material. With closed cells, heat can only transfer through the solid foam structure itself, which is minimal.
During manufacturing, cells fill with a low-conductivity gas, this gas has lower thermal conductivity than air, which improves insulation performance.
Most PIR boards have aluminium foil facings bonded to both sides. These reflective surfaces reduce radiant heat transfer across air gaps adjacent to the board. This matters in cavity constructions or where boards sit against air spaces.
Applications of PIR Board Insulation
PIR insulation works across almost every insulated element in a building. It is commonly used in:
- Pitched Roofs
- Between rafters
- Above rafters
- Below rafters
- Flat Roofs
- Cavity Walls
- Solid Walls
- Solid Floors
- Suspended Timber Floors
